Hypnotherapy in Southampton
Personalised Hypnotherapy for Lasting Change

Change the Patterns That Are Keeping You Stuck
Sometimes you understand exactly what you want to change, but knowing what to do isn’t enough. You may know that you want to feel more confident, stop overthinking, reduce anxiety or break a habit, yet find yourself responding in the same way despite your best efforts. Perhaps you’ve spent a long time trying to think your way out of the problem. Hypnotherapy offers a different way of working.
By combining focused attention, guided relaxation and therapeutic techniques, hypnotherapy can help you work with the thoughts, emotional responses and patterns that have become deeply established.
I provide individual hypnotherapy in Southampton for adults, creating a calm, confidential space where we can focus on the changes you want to make. Every session is tailored to you rather than following a generic script or one-size-fits-all programme.
If you’re looking for hypnotherapy in Southampton and would like to explore whether it could help, you can arrange a free introductory consultation.
What does hypnotherapy in Southampton look like?
Hypnotherapy uses a naturally occurring state of focused attention and deep relaxation as part of a therapeutic process.
You may already experience similar states without realising it – becoming completely absorbed in a book, driving a familiar route without consciously thinking about every turn, or becoming so immersed in something that the rest of the world temporarily fades into the background.
During hypnosis, you’re guided towards a relaxed and focused state where you may find it easier to pay attention to particular thoughts, feelings, imagery and patterns.
Contrary to some common misconceptions, hypnosis doesn’t mean losing control.
You remain aware throughout the session and can hear and respond to what is being said. You cannot be forced to do something against your wishes, and you can stop the process at any time.
Hypnotherapy is not about handing control over to someone else.
It’s about creating the conditions in which you can explore and practise different ways of responding.

Hypnotherapy Tailored To You
Face-to-Face Hypnotherapy in Southampton
I don’t believe that hypnotherapy should involve pressing play on a standard script and expecting the same result for everyone.
Your experiences, emotional responses and reasons for seeking support are unique.
Before using hypnosis, we’ll spend time understanding what you’re experiencing and what you’d like to be different.
This might involve exploring:
- What triggers the difficulty
- How you currently respond
- What thoughts and beliefs are involved
- What emotions arise
- How the pattern affects your life
- What you’ve already tried
- What you’d like to feel or do differently
This information helps shape the therapeutic work.
Hypnotherapy can then be used to support the changes you’re working towards, whether that’s developing greater confidence, responding differently to anxiety, reducing emotional reactivity or building a stronger sense of control.

Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy
My approach to hypnotherapy is informed by my wider background in psychology, counselling and psychotherapy.
This means I’m interested in more than simply the symptom you want to change.
Sometimes a pattern has developed because of something you’ve experienced over many years.
Anxiety may be connected to a fear of disappointing others.
Perfectionism may be protecting you from feelings of inadequacy.
Low confidence may have developed through repeated criticism or difficult relationships.
A habit may have originally served a useful purpose before becoming something you no longer want or need.
Understanding these connections can be an important part of creating lasting change.
Where appropriate, I can integrate hypnotherapy with therapeutic approaches including person-centred therapy, CBT, ACT, psychodynamic thinking, trauma-informed practice and parts work.
The approach is always guided by your needs rather than by a requirement to follow one particular model.
What Happens During Hypnotherapy?
Your first session is not about immediately putting you into hypnosis.
We’ll begin by talking.
You’ll have an opportunity to explain what’s brought you to therapy, what you’ve been experiencing and what you’d like to change.
We’ll also discuss how hypnotherapy works, answer any questions you have and make sure you feel comfortable with the process.
Depending on your goals, a session may include:
Understanding What’s Happening
We’ll explore the pattern you’re experiencing and consider what may be maintaining it.
Preparing for Hypnosis
I’ll explain what to expect and help you become comfortable with the process.
Guided Hypnosis
You’ll be guided through a personalised relaxation and focused-attention exercise designed around the therapeutic goals we’ve identified.
Therapeutic Work
Depending on what you’re working towards, this may involve imagery, suggestions, rehearsal of different responses or other therapeutic techniques.
Reflection and Integration
We’ll come out of hypnosis gradually and take time to reflect on the experience and consider how you can continue supporting the changes between sessions.
You remain aware and in control throughout.
What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?
One of the most common concerns people have before trying hypnotherapy is whether they’ll actually be able to experience hypnosis.
There is no single way that hypnosis feels.
Some people experience a strong sense of physical relaxation. Others notice that their attention becomes more focused or that they become deeply absorbed in their thoughts and imagery.
You may notice that your sense of time changes slightly, or simply feel calm and comfortable.
You don’t have to feel dramatically different for hypnotherapy to be useful.
There is also no need to “switch off” your mind completely.
You can hear what’s happening, notice your thoughts and remain aware of your surroundings.
The experience is different for everyone, which is another reason I tailor sessions rather than relying on a predetermined script.
Is Hypnotherapy Safe?
Hypnotherapy is generally considered safe when provided appropriately by a suitably trained professional.
You remain in control throughout the process.
You cannot become permanently stuck in hypnosis, and hypnosis does not involve surrendering control of your behaviour.
As with any therapeutic intervention, hypnotherapy isn’t necessarily appropriate for everyone or every difficulty.
During our initial conversation, we’ll consider your circumstances and whether hypnotherapy is an appropriate approach for you.
If I believe another form of therapy would be more suitable, I’ll tell you honestly.
My priority is finding an approach that is appropriate for your needs, rather than trying to make hypnotherapy fit every situation.
Why Choose Hypnotherapy in Southampton?
Finding the right person to work with matters.
Hypnotherapy can feel unfamiliar, particularly if you’ve never experienced hypnosis before. Having a therapist who takes time to understand you and explain the process can make the experience much more comfortable.
My background in psychology, counselling and psychotherapy, alongside my hypnotherapy training, allows me to look at the wider picture rather than treating hypnosis as an isolated technique.
I aim to provide an approach that is:
Individual
Your sessions are built around your experiences and goals rather than a generic programme.
Collaborative
We’ll work together throughout the process. You’re not handing responsibility for change over to someone else.
Evidence-Informed
My approach draws on psychological understanding and therapeutic techniques rather than relying on exaggerated claims about hypnosis.
Compassionate
Change can be difficult, particularly when a pattern has developed as a way of coping. We’ll approach the process with curiosity rather than judgement.
Practical
The aim isn’t simply to have an interesting experience during hypnosis. It’s to help you develop changes that have relevance to your everyday life.
